Why Muscle Loss Matters More Than You Think

Most people focus on the number staring back at them from the scales. Your body, however, is a little more sophisticated.

Weight loss is made up of different components, including body fat, water, glycogen and lean tissue. Lean tissue includes muscles, organs and connective tissue. Ideally, you want the vast majority of the weight you lose to come from fat - not muscle.

Large scientific trials of one GLP-1 solution have demonstrated average weight losses of around 15% of initial body weight over 68 weeks (1). Similar studies of another type have reported average reductions exceeding 20% in many participants (3).

That's remarkable. However, body composition analyses show that a proportion of this weight loss is lean mass. This isn't unique to GLP-1 solutions - it happens with almost every form of calorie restriction, including dieting.

Researchers generally estimate that approximately 20–40% of weight lost during significant calorie restriction may come from fat-free mass, although the exact proportion varies depending on protein intake, exercise habits, age and starting body composition (4).

Fortunately, losing some lean mass isn't inevitable. Studies consistently demonstrate that resistance training and adequate protein intake substantially support muscle retention during weight loss. Emerging expert opinion suggests creatine may further support these strategies, although dedicated scientific trials in GLP-1 users are still needed.

Why Muscle Is More Than Just Something That Looks Good at the Beach

Let's clear up one of the biggest misconceptions in weight loss. Muscle isn't simply cosmetic. It's an active metabolic organ.

Healthy muscle helps you:

Around 95% of the body's creatine is stored inside skeletal muscle, where it acts as a rapid energy reserve. During short bursts of activity - lifting weights, climbing stairs or sprinting for the bus - your muscles use ATP (adenosine triphosphate) as their immediate source of energy.

Unfortunately, ATP runs out remarkably quickly. Creatine helps recycle ATP, allowing muscles to continue producing force for a little longer before fatigue sets in (2). That's why creatine has become one of the most studied supplements in sports nutrition.

Hundreds of scientific studies have shown that creatine monohydrate can support high-intensity exercise performance, strength gains from resistance training and lean body mass when paired with exercise (5).

Importantly, creatine isn't a steroid, hormone or stimulant. It's a naturally occurring compound found in foods such as beef, pork and fish, although obtaining the suggested supplemental daily intake of around 3 grams from food alone would require eating impractically large amounts every day.
