To ensure the very best quality, and a high level of active ingredients the extract is obtained from whole green tea leaves harvested young and without the leaves being fermented, (the process that turns green tea in to black tea). Just one of these tablets is equivalent to ½ litre of traditionally brewed green tea but with a caffeine content a fraction of normal tea.
Firstly, as a responsible company, we do review all the available evidence when formulating a product for the range. Our Green Tea (code 132) contains a relevant but moderate level of green tea extract which is equivalent to approximately half a litre or 2-3 cups of brewed green tea, which is a moderate intake. We also use a whole herb extract, which means all of the nutrients found naturally in green tea will also be present in the product. We do not artificially elevate the level of one particular catechin and many of the issues arising from the use of green tea supplements are thought to be related to an increased level of the catechin EGCG. It is high levels of this particular catechin that the article mentions concern has focused on. Many supplements have a higher level of EGCG than is naturally found in green tea - sometimes between 400 and 850mg per daily dose. The article mentions EFSA (The European Food Safety Authority) concluding that catechin (EGCG specifically) doses at or above 800mg per day may pose concerns. However, in comparison our product provides 250mg of total catechins, of which EGCG is only one of four present.
Furthermore it is impossible to be certain of the quality of the green tea supplements being taken and whether any other ingredients were included. There is also some discussion as to whether the adverse effects could be linked to the method of extraction; for example extraction using ethanol may be problematic. Our Green Tea is formulated using a 100% water extraction method and no alcohol is used in the manufacture of this product.
As a responsible company we would not using a food supplement as an alternative to medication, without discussing this with your GP.
