Odylique joins Nature’s Best

Odylique joins Nature’s Best

Nature’s Best is partnering with Odylique, certified organic skincare producers since 1984, and family-owned business based in the rolling fields of Suffolk.

“Odylique”. Pronounced “Oh-dih-leek” (for those who struggle with their French linguistics!), the name is derived from a phrase that means “power of nature” and it couldn’t be a more fitting name. A dedicated team of skin-loving experts handmake every single one of Odylique’s products right here in Suffolk, UK. This makes them fairy unique in the skincare world and able to promise the highest quality and freshness to everything they make.

Skincare that is kind to the planet

Odylique was one of the first companies to create certified organic cosmetics and formulate the purest cosmetics possible.

Each one of the ingredients used has therapeutic credentials. There are a few ways in which Odylique makes this happen:

  • By using actives – herbs and essential oils – in therapeutic concentrations.

  • Plant oils must be virgin and cold-pressed so that they have their full antioxidant vitamin-content intact (this more actively nourishes the skin).

  • No synthetic chemicals. Ever.

  • Everything is certified to strict Soil Association organic standards.

  • There is no lanolin, wheat, dairy & soya derivatives, salicylic acid, peanut oil, common allergen tree nut oils and more...all the things that can upset sensitive skin.

  • They NEVER test on animals. Instead, they test on human volunteers who have sensitive and allergy-prone skin.

  • Odylique is big on doing the planet as many favours as they can. As such, they make sure that their raw materials suppliers and all their distributors follow the no-testing-on-animals rule, and they go out of their way to adhere to Fair Trade standards and use responsible, sustainable packaging.

Fairly traded ingredients

All Odylique ingredients are sourced with the greatest respect to their growers and the environment. For ingredients grown in developing countries, they buy certified Fairtrade wherever such exists.

Odylique believe that using organic, superior first cold-pressed virgin plant oils and active herbs extracted without heat to conserve their precious antioxidants and other vital constituents, is the key to success of their unique organic skincare. They follow the precautionary principle to formulate the purest cosmetics possible. Take a look at some of the ingredients found in the featured range with Nature’s Best below…

Aloe Vera (Aloe Barbadensis) (Organic)

Aloe Vera Juice has an incredible reputation as a potent healer of the skin and internal surface linings, which is legendary and well documented. It comes from the same plant family as garlic and as such can be used both internally (being eaten or drunk) or externally (by being applied).

First discovered by the Egyptians over 5000 years ago, it was reported that Cleopatra bathed in Aloe Vera juice to anti-age and mentions of its powers have been found in the bible.

Avocado Oil (Persea Gratissima) (Organic)

The rich green cold-pressed oil from the fresh fruit is unique amongst oils. It can penetrate quickly into the lower skin layers where its high content of vitamins A, D, E, lecithin, phytosterols and Omega 9 fatty acids promote healing, skin regeneration and protection from the ageing effects of UV light and pollution.

Beeswax (Cera Alba) (Organic)

Starter hives are carried high into the trees of pristine forests away from marauding animals. In exchange, some beeswax is carefully collected without harm to the bees and simply filtered to remove impurities, thus retaining all its wonderful properties and honeyed aroma. Revered for millennia for its antiseptic, wound healing benefits, it also gives non-pore clogging protective emollience to our therapeutic balms.

Bergamot (Citrus Aurantium Bergamia) (Organic)

This beautiful essential oil is cold pressed from Italian bergamot fruit peel and has a delightfully uplifting citrus aroma which helps relieve nervous anxiety. Considered a ‘balancing’ oil, it is gently antiseptic, toning and cleansing for the skin and being bergaptene-free, causes no photosensitivity.

Calendula (Calendula Officinalis) (Organic & Biodynamic)

Commonly known as the garden marigold, its bright orange petals are high in beta carotene (pro-vitamin A) and flavonoids. Odylique use a highly concentrated form in many of their products for its restorative, soothing and antioxidant properties.

Traditionally acclaimed for calming sensitive and hypersensitive skin.

With a beautiful sweet, fresh aroma this essential oil is calming, relaxing and soothing to skin and senses. Excellent for children, the elderly and during pregnancy.

Chickweed (Stellaria Media) (Organic & Biodynamic)

This common native plant is acclaimed for its ability to calm and soothe the skin.

Cocoa Butter (Theobroma Cacao) (Organic & Fairtrade)

With the scrumptious aroma of chocolate, this unrefined butter melts on contact with the skin, is richly emollient and packed with skin-caring and protective antioxidants. Calorie-free indulgence!

Coconut Oil (Cocos Nucifera) (Organic & Fairtrade)

Extracted from the fresh fruit of the coconut palm, virgin and organic coconut oils are a world apart from the chemically refined, bleached and deodorised conventional type. Delicious and healthy to eat, virgin coconut oil is high in protective antioxidants and antibacterial fatty acids. This ‘miracle’ oil of the Tropics suits all skin types and is light, non-greasy and rapidly absorbed giving deep hydration.

Frankincense (Boswellia carterii)

Steam distilled from precious resin ‘tears’, this essential oil has a warm, spicy, balsamic aroma. Calming to the mind and respiratory system, it is also restorative to dry and ageing skin.

Horsetail (Equisetum arvense) (Organic & Biodynamic)

An ancient fern-like plant rich in bioflavonoids, vitamin C and minerals, particularly silica, known to support skin health.

Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis) (Organic)

Cold-pressed from the seeds of a sub-tropical shrub, this unique liquid wax has a similar composition to the skin’s natural oils. Antioxidant, light-textured and quickly absorbed, it has excellent moisturising qualities for all skin types.

Lavender (Lavandula Angustifolia) (Organic)

A beautifully fragrant essential oil with many qualities for skin and senses. An excellent all-round first aid remedy, it can be sparingly applied neat to the skin to soothe spots and insect bites.

Lemon (Citrus Limonum) - (Organic)

Cold expressed from the peel of ripe lemons, this fresh, vibrant essential oil is uplifting, refreshing and toning for oily and dull complexions.

Lemongrass (Cymbopogon Citratus) - (Organic)

Extracted from a scented grass used in medicine and cooking, the essential oil has a delicious refreshing lemon aroma with insect deterrent properties. Its toning properties are particularly beneficial to oily skin.

Olive Oil (Olea Europaea) (Organic)

Produced by a small dedicated family co-operative in southern Spain, Odylique’s extra virgin oil comes from the first cold pressing of the fruit, conserving all its full antioxidant vitamin E and other vital constituents like squalene (a natural skin component). In ancient Greece, athletes ritually rubbed this “liquid gold” all over their body in the firm belief it conferred strength and youthfulness. More recent research has shown that olive oil has an excellent moisturising effect on the skin and leaves a breathable protective film that holds in moisture. It is used widely in our skincare and is suitable for the most sensitive skin.

Pomegranate (Punica Granatum) (Organic)

A unique source of Omega 5 fatty acid this oil is highly moisturising and provides relief for dry, distressed and mature skin. As well as improving skin elasticity and helping reduce the appearance of fine lines.

Rose (Rosa damascena, centifolia) (Organic & Biodynamic)

It takes the petals of around 1kg of roses to produce 1-2 drops of pure rose otto essential oil. Odylique use both the precious essential oil and hydrolat of these exquisitely fragrant petals for their unrivalled uplifting fragrance and skin supporting properties. Highly antioxidant, the hydrolat contains vitamins A,B,C,D, E, along with 21 amino acids and a broad spectrum of minerals giving it amazing skin calming, soothing, toning and cell regenerative qualities, particular beneficial to sensitive and ageing skin.

Rosehip (Rosa canina) (Organic)

The deep orange fruit of the rose is exceptionally high in vitamins and plant sterols which support skin regeneration and healing.

The bright orange and highly nutritious berries of this thorny shrub are packed with antioxidant vitamins A, B, C & E and are a uniquely high plant source of palmitoleic acid (Omega 7), an essential skin component which declines with age. It promotes skin elasticity, supports skin regeneration, sun protection and healing.

Shea Butter (Butyrospermum Parkii) (Organic & Fairtrade)

Direct from a women’s co-operative in Africa, Odylique’s raw shea (karite) butter is highly moisturising and emollient to skin. Only raw, unrefined shea butter contains the plant sterols and antioxidants which give it the most properties.

St John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum)

The reparative properties of the variety of herb Odylique use have been shown to be particularly beneficially for hypersensitive skin. It causes no sun-sensitivity.

Ylang Ylang (Cananga Odorata) (Organic)

The sensuous, exotic, floral fragrance of this essential oil helps to relax and lift tension and balance dry or oily skin conditions.

The ingredients Odylique avoid

30-years focused on sensitive skin means that Odylique have a unique position on potential allergens. They avoid all synthetic chemicals and common skin sensitivity triggers.

Odylique use the ‘precautionary principle’ to determine whether they feel an ingredient is acceptable for use in their organic health and beauty products. This means that if any research casts doubt over the safety of an ingredient to humans or the environment, they will not use it in their products; it’s the ‘if in doubt, do without’ rule!

This leads Odylique to avoid all synthetic ingredients, common irritants and allergens (and because of their focus on very sensitive skin they even avoid wheat, soy, common allergen nut oils, salicylates and dairy derivatives.)

Plus, the products are tested on their panel of volunteers who all have allergy-prone and sensitive skin.

These are some of the many ingredients Odylique avoid:

Artificial Colour

No artificial colour can be found in any Odylique products.

Artificial Preservatives

Odylique uses no synthetic preservatives. This includes parabens, triclosan, Methyl(chloro)isothiazolinone (MI or MCI). To maintain a reasonable product ‘shelf-life’, they rely on a combination of proven, safe antimicrobials found in nature and the broad spectrum of antioxidants naturally present in the plant oils and herbs they use.

<[> Odylique do not, never have, and never will use any microplastics in their products. As a wholly certified organic company, they also wouldn’t be allowed to; the aquatic toxicity and other environmental standards are incredibly strict. Instead of these nasty little beads, they use natural materials such as sugar, poppy seed and oatmeal as exfoliants instead.

Palm Oil

Odylique have never used palm oil as an ingredient in any products. They do use a couple of ingredients that may use palm oil as an input material, for example, the emulsifiers cetearyl glucoside or cetearyl alcohol, which are largely derived from corn sugar and or coconut. They have sought assurance from their suppliers that if they are at certain times obliged to use palm oil as a feeder material, it is from a certified sustainable (RSPO) source. This is also a requirement of their organic certification along with a guarantee of no genetically modified ingredients.

Petroleum or Mineral Oils

There is simply no need to use petroleum, mineral oil or their derivatives in cosmetic products. The plant kingdom offers a plethora of wonderful alternatives that are rich in skin-caring nutrients.

Common Food Allergens

Odylique exclude common food allergens such as wheat, dairy and soya derivatives, peanut oil, sesame, common allergen tree nut oils (e.g. walnut, almond), and more.

Less Common Cosmetic Allergens

Odylique go the extra step and avoid ingredients that are found in natural skincare, but that our customers with allergies prefer us not to use. This includes things like lanolin, potassium sorbate, salicylic acid, sodium benzoate, and more.

Animal-Derived Ingredients

All the ingredients are cruelty-free. No animal-derived ingredients including carmine and silk are used.

Products do not contain aluminium, nickel, or tin, or any heavy metal contaminants such as lead, mercury or bismuth.

There are no sulphates (including SLS) in their products.

Organic Purity & Performance:

Organic certification guarantees complete product purity. It also means plant oils and medicinal herbs contain the maximum vitamins and other antioxidants that can be readily absorbed and utilised by the skin for its care and beauty. A true synergy of science and nature. Studies show that when plants are grown by organic agriculture, they are more resilient, and this gives them a higher vitamin and mineral content than when grown intensively and sprayed with pesticides and herbicides**.

Maximum Antioxidants

Antioxidant vitamins neutralise the damaging effects of reactive molecules called ‘free radicals’. These are generated in our body by its essential use of oxygen and on the skin by exposure to sunlight, airborne pollutants and some synthetic sunscreen agents. Unchecked, these free radicals cause a chain reaction of injury to the cells and tissues and, on the skin, results in sun damage, pigmentation and premature ageing. Brightly coloured fruit, vegetables, herbs and fresh, virgin cold-pressed oils are naturally rich in antioxidants, especially vitamins C, E, beta carotene and polyphenols so they play a very protective role in our diet, but what about our skin?

At Odylique they have long recognised that the skin needs the valuable protection of these potent antioxidants too and by incorporating them in their natural bio-available form into their skin care, they can harness the power of nature to full effect. They believe that using superior first cold-pressed virgin plant oils and active herbs extracted without heat to conserve their precious antioxidants and other vital constituents, is the key to the success of their unique organic skincare.

Biodynamic Ingredients:

Biodynamic cultivation is an enhanced system of organic agriculture developed according to the exacting principles of Rudolph Steiner in the early 1920s. As with organic agriculture, no synthetic fertilisers, insecticides, fungicides or herbicides are used, but greater focus is placed on the synergy of nature by enriching the soil with special composting preparations to balance its valuable micro-flora and provide optimum growing conditions. This is proven to result in plants full of vitality, with an impressive spectrum of therapeutic constituents.

Odylique incorporate these precious herbs wherever possible across the entire range. They are grown in their region on a biodynamic farm carrying both organic and Demeter certifications.
