Do I need to take a Multi Vitamin and Mineral?

We certainly advocate that healthy eating remains the best source of vitamins, minerals and nutrients. The problem is that it the pace of modern day life makes it really difficult to ensure that we are getting a balanced meal. Every day we would need to ensure a good intake of a wide variety of fruit and vegetables grown in nutrient rich soil as well as a good source of Omega 3 fatty acids, fibre and many other nutrients. In fact, The Journal of American Medical Association concluded that “Most people do not consume an optimal amount of all vitamins by diet alone. It therefore appears prudent for all adults to take vitamin supplements”.

We also need to bear in mind that there is an increase in nutritional needs nowadays due to modern day factors such as pollution, farming methods, soil nutrient depletion and toxin exposure. We also lead more stressful lives which can have an impact on our nutritional status.

We know that certain groups of people are especially at risk of being nutrient deficient. These can include –
  • Elderly or disabled people who can’t prepare their own food or shop for themselves, and therefore may eat less fresh and good quality food. Elderly people may also have less appetite and so eat only small amounts, so will consume fewer nutrients for this reason also; and their absorption of nutrients can also be impaired.

  • Other people who eat a lot of processed foods or have a poor diet, for whatever reason. Teenagers and under-25s are often part of this group as they may pay little regard to the idea of a healthy diet – and often need a lot of energy for their lifestyle. Any adults who lead busy lives and tend to grab food ‘on the go’ also tend to eat more processed foods and less fresh food.

  • Anyone who consumes a lot of grain or flour-based foods (bread, pasta, rice, pastries, pizza etc.), at the expense of vegetables and animal proteins is also more likely to be deficient in vitamins and minerals. This is because grains are usually less nutrient-dense than these other foods – even if they are ‘whole grain’ versions rather than refined ‘white’ versions! Grains also contain substances called phytates that bind with minerals in our food and reduce their absorption.

  • Vegetarians/vegans. Animal foods supply some vitamins and minerals that are scarce in plant foods. Good examples are vitamin B12, which is virtually only present in animal foods; iron, which can be found in plant foods but only in a poorly-absorbed form; and for vegans, iodine – which is found in milk and other dairy foods, and selenium. Vegans may also consume low levels of fat-soluble nutrients such as vitamin A and vitamin K.

  • Anyone who is stressed, run-down or low in energy. Many nutrients are needed for energy production, including vitamin C, magnesium and B vitamins, and so deficiency of any of these may result in fatigue.

  • Those suffering with low mood - several vitamins and minerals are needed for production of hormones such as serotonin and dopamine, our ‘feel-good’ hormones.

  • Anyone who has poor absorption of nutrients. As well as elderly people, this may include people who have had a gastric bypass operation, surgery to remove part of the bowel, or who have specific conditions that can affect the bowel walls such as coeliac disease. In these cases it is best to get a gentle, well-absorbed multivitamin, which should be advised by a nutritionist.

  • Sports people, or anyone else doing a lot of exercise. All the vitamins and minerals that are needed for energy production will be used up more quickly in those who do a lot of exercise, and sometimes it can be hard to eat enough nutrient-dense foods to replace them.

  • Anyone who drinks large amounts of alcohol. Alcohol has an effect on the absorption, utilization, storage in the body and excretion of many micronutrients – including calcium, magnesium and zinc, which are excreted from the body in greater amounts in those who drink lots of alcohol14. Alcoholics also often show deficiencies of vitamins B1, B2, B6, folic acid, vitamin C and vitamin A.

  • Lastly, there is even a case for multivitamin usage by people who buy and eat mainly lower-quality foods, including fruit and vegetables that have been stored for long periods of time and transported for long distances – as is the case with a lot of supermarket produce. Some nutrients can be easily lost from vegetables and fruits that are picked a long time before they are eaten. Vitamin C in particular is subject to being lost through use of nitrogen fertilizers, long storage duration, bruising during transit, as well as cooking and processing after purchase.

It is best to take your multi vitamin and mineral with food. Some people can feel a bit nauseous if they take it without food.

What is the best time of day to take a Multi Vitamin and Mineral?

Where the dose is two or more tablets per day, then if possible, split the dose into morning and evening for a more even spread throughout the day. If your tablet is just one a day, then simply take it with food at whatever time suits you best.

How do I store my Multi Vitamin and Mineral?

Multi vitamins and minerals are quite easy to store. Just keep them in a dry, cool place and avoid hot, humid and damp locations. Always check the expiry date.

Why do Multi Vitamins and Minerals contain levels higher than the NRV (Nutrient Reference Intake)?
