Plant sterols are similar in structure to cholesterol and work by partially blocking blood cholesterol absorption from the gut into the bloodstream and the body normally removes any cholesterol not absorbed.

Cholesterol is a waxy substance largely produced by the liver and is also supplied by our diet, mostly from dairy and meat sources. The body needs a certain amount of cholesterol to maintain normal cell functions, the manufacture of vitamin D and certain hormones but smoking, excess weight, genetics and a lack of exercise can all contribute to high cholesterol levels.
